Yes, Catherine Holstein has famous friends, but I’m not even going to mention them because this girl doesn’t need famous names connected with her to make it. She would be just as successful and note worthy without them. Her collections are amazing and she has quickly become my latest obsession. Her design philosophy? “To make easy clothes that are stylized but simple enough that you don’t have to think about them. I don’t believe you should have to change your outfit to go out at night.” Thank you Catherine, for making all our lives a little easier!
Holstein, born in New York, is only 25 years old. She also lived in Cali for a bit, but mostly grew up in London. She went to High School at the American School in London and then double majored in fine arts and fashion at Parsons in New York. She uses the eclectic colors from London fashion and fuses them with the cool aesthetic of New York.
Catherine’s designs definitely have that cool downtown girl feel, but truly, anyone can wear them. I see myself in her clothes, my sister in her clothes, and my mom in her clothes, and we are all very different! I love the blues and yellows in her Spring/Summer 2009 collection and her perfect lacy rompers. But the splash of purple in her Fall/Winter 2009 collection is just the right touch of color for the times. I think she very conscientiously thought about the economy when designing this latest collection. She’s even lowered her price range a bit this season. The colors are your basic gray, black, and beige, but the cuts are spectacular. She always creates that little something extra with the placement of buttons, or the sexy cutout, or the longer cut rompers from Spring I totally thought were dresses. That seems to be her specialty – creating that subtle surprise.
Catherine has said she ultimately wants her collection to be inviting. I love that. That’s what how we feel at Wardrobe Wire. No one should feel left out when it comes to fashion and I think Catherine Holstein designs for everyone. Her prices include tops at $155, cotton skirts at $435, high waisted pants for $418, and a silk skirt for $605. These are great prices for the style and for keeping the manufacturing in the US. She has purposely found the best cheaper fabrics for fall and her price points will be lower. She wants to continue to include a larger audience and understands different price points are a must. She hopes to one day have a full Catherine Holstein brand that will include house wares. The ride is just beginning for this fashion talent and I plan on following her through the whole thing!
You can buy her designs at Saks, Des Kohan in LA, I Heart in NY, and buydefinition.com online.
