What to Wear to a Holiday Party

Clip This

‘Tis the season to be jolly!

Holiday time is the season of green, red, and black velvet and great jewelry! But, before you whip together what to wear, ask yourself: Is it an office party or a casual get together? For an office party, you’re going to want to be a little more conservative than if you’re at a fete hosted by friends. But, from there, your possibilities are endless! Ditch the denim (unless it’s inky dark), unless you know it’s a casual party. Even if the invitation calls for jeans, pair it with a nice collared shirt or sweater, belt, and shoes. Oh, don't forget the Santa hat. Just kidding!

For women, a skirt or dress with tights and boots or closed toe pumps should work perfectly for most events. Add a little sparkle and shine with a gorgeous necklace, cocktail ring, or diamond earrings. Winter white slacks with a cashmere sweater, a sweater dress with tights, or black velvet pants or skirt with a white silk blouse or other pretty top can all be great alternatives. Holidays are the perfect time to be festive, so don't be afraid to break out a colorful party dress and some sparkly heels. Stay warm by wearing a faux fur coat or wrap and some elbow length leather gloves. Fancy!

Men, a suit, suit without a tie, or a sports coat and slacks with a collared shirt or sweater will work for most events. Make sure you’re wearing a belt and dress shoes. It’ll give the polished look that’s appropriate at most parties.

As much as it seems like it’d be fun, we recommend avoiding themed holiday wear such as sweaters with appliqué Santas, lights, or reindeer. After all, you might find yourself under the mistletoe at some point in the night. You probably will regret that flashing Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer!

Hairstyle Ideas:

You can’t go wrong with a classic hairstyle for the holiday parties. The holidays are all about tradition, and your hairstyle should reflect that!

Waves, for example, are very festive, glamorous, and soft, yet full of movement. A wavy hairstyle a la the 1950s can be quite charming at a holiday party. You can modernize it by adding accessories like a jeweled pin or a barrette.

Classic up-dos are always a good look, but don't go with anything too fancy in order to keep it modern. An up-do can be created simply by pinning the hair up with bobby pins. A loose, half up, half down look also works. You can curl the ends of the loose hair to create a soft wave.

Short hair also looks good with a slight wave and can be accessorized with a cute hairpin or headband. A holiday accessory can be worn with any hairstyle to add cheer and spirit to your hairdo. There are many headbands, hairpins, and bows to complement any outfit. They can be found in most accessory stores or online.

Avoid using too much styling product in the hair, including wax, hair spray, or gel. The only thing a gel should be used for is a finger wave, which is also a beautiful hairstyle for any holiday party! Remember to deep condition your hair more frequently in the colder season to preserve a healthy shine.
